Fed: Hill says will not try to influence US
Environment Minister ROBERT HILL says Australia will work closely with the United States
on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
But he says Australia won't try to influence the US.
US president GEORGE W BUSH is expected to announce an alternative plan to the Kyoto
Protocol at the next round of world environmental talks in October.
During talks in Bonn in July, nations agreed on the rule book for the 1997 Kyoto Protocol
to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but the US refused to ratify it.
Senator HILL has told the Nine Network that at Bonn, Australia was able to move the
process ahead while at the same time keeping the door open to the US.
Meanwhile the minister says he's begun talking with minor green parties for preferences
in the upcoming federal election.
