Huddersfield University Business School ; The A-Z of Business Schools 2007

AGE: Ten in its present form.

HISTORY: Began as two distinct schools - the school ofaccounting, law and management and the school of business in the1970s.

ADDRESS: Queensgate campus at the University of Huddersfield.

AMBIENCE: The campus is set alongside the River Colne and theLeeds/Manchester canal runs through its centre. Both the city centreand the beautiful Yorkshire countryside are within strikingdistance.

VITAL STATISTICS: 3,000 students and 130 staff, broken down intofour departments - accountancy, business studies, law, managementand marketing. There are 32 undergraduate programmes and 20postgraduate programmes. Three MBAs - full-time; block MBA and part-time MBA over five semesters, which are internet supported.

ADDED VALUE: Awarded Association of Chartered CertifiedAccountants premier college status accreditation. Accredited by theChartered Management institute and the Chartered Institute ofPersonnel and Development. The school says the MBA programmeprovides "academically rigorous management education and a soundfoundation for developing and enhancing management ability".

EASY TO GET INTO? You need a 2:2 honours degree and a minimum oftwo years' work experience. For the part-time MBA, 80 per cent ofapplicants are offered places.

GURUS: Professor Chris Cowton, editor of Business Ethics: AEuropean Review (Blackwell); Colin Drury, emeritus professor, chairof accountancy; Professor John Thompson, chair of entrepreneurship.

INTERNATIONAL CONNECTIONS: The school delivers its programme in awide range of countries including Hong Kong, Singapore, Jordan andGreece.

RESEARCH: Scored 3b (top grade is 5) in the 2001 researchassessment exercise. Strong research in environmental management,sustainability, ethics and social entrepreneurship.

TEACHING: Rated satisfactory by the Higher Education FundingCouncil in 1994. Scored higher for student satisfaction than anyother university in west and south Yorkshire in the first everHigher Education Funding Council for England National StudentSurvey. More than 80 per cent of its scores were at or above thenational average, with particularly good scores for learningresources and library support.

STUDENT PROFILE: Full-time MBA aged 23-50; part-time, 25-55. Full-time male:female ratio 50:50; part-time is 50:50, too.

COST: Full-time is [pound]5,510 for EU students; [pound]8,610 fornon-EU. Part-time costs [pound]5,822.

RETURN ON INVESTMENT: Alumni report an immediate salary rise of10 per cent.
