Qld: Munchhausen's mother jailed for seven years

A woman who tortured three of her children by making them sick and putting them throughdangerous medical procedures has been jailed for seven years.

The 35-year-old Gold Coast mother of four -- who can't be identified -- was sufferingfrom Munchhausen's Syndrome by Proxy.

The disorder involves people drawing attention to themselves by deceiving others intothinking a loved one is ill.

The woman was found guilty by a District Court jury in June of torture, unlawful woundingand administering a noxious substance with intent to annoy, between October 1996 and November2001.

The charges involved three of the woman's four children, who were all aged three orunder at the time.

The woman's been sentenced to seven years' jail with no recommendation for parole.

Judge KERRY O'BRIEN said the woman has shown no remorse for fabricating and manufacturingsymptoms and putting the two boys and one girl through often potentially life threateningprocedures and tests.
