A season-long birthday party is planned to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the New York Philharmonic.
There will be a $700,000 commissioning program, the largest the Philharmonic has ever undertaken, a European tour and many special events.
Opening night Wednesday
will be conducted by Kurt Masur and will feature soprano Kathleen Battle. On Saturday, Dec. 7, the actual birthday, the podium will be shared by Masur and two of his predecessors, Zubin Mehta and Pierre Boulez. Both concerts will be telecast on the "Live From Lincoln Center" series on PBS.
Masur began his tenure as music director of the Philharmonic in 1991 instead of the originally scheduled '92 so he'd be in place to help plan the 150th anniversary celebrations.
