Vic: Compulsive gambler jailed five and a half years

A senior insurance company officer who stole more than $4 million over almost 10 yearshas been jailed for a minimum term of five-and-half years.

Victorian County Court Judge THOMAS NEESHAM says 44-year-old MAGDI ATALLA used unwittingjuniors as his tools in his trusted position at Wesfarmers Federation Insurance in Carlton.

The court heard that ATALLA, of Seaford, arranged for the transfer of more than 1,000company cheques into bank accounts he opened in false names.

ATALLA, a compulsive gambler, frittered away more than $4.3 million in just under 10years from September 1991.

A married man with three children, ATALLA spent the cash at various gambling venuesincluding Crown Casino.

He pleaded guilty to 15 charges of obtaining property by deception.

ATALLA goes to jail for a maximum term of seven-and-a-half years.
